Bridgwater put in an excellent home performance to comfortably beat Yatton Athletic on Saturday.
Bridgwater started the game at an electric tempo with new signing Matt Connick causing the Yatton backline all sorts of trouble with his pace. They should have been two up within five minutes after they spurned two close range chances in quick succession.
The home side took a deserved lead after 35 minutes when experienced defender Rob Snook rose to powerfully head home a John Matthews corner. At the other end goalkeeper Josh Hayward had to be alert to rush off his line to block with his legs when the striker was through on goal.
Bridgwater doubled their advantage after 55 minutes when Matt Connick’s mishit cross, looped over visiting keeper Sam Bailey-Hocking and found the top corner.
Yatton were almost back in it immediately when Bridgwater switched off from kick off but captain Connor O'Neill, who was outstanding throughout was on hand to clear off the line.
The points were sealed when the energetic Charlie White broke through the Yatton defence and coolly finished from a tight angle. The result could have been more emphatic, but Bridgwater took their foot off the pedal and in the closing minutes Mike Duffy missed a penalty after a spot kick was award for handball.
Manager Luke Buckingham said,
“It was another excellent performance from the players, everyone played their part and it was an entertaining game to be involved in. The players adapted well to a different formation and on another day I think we may have scored three or four more.”
