Team BC Female football got back to winning ways on Wednesday 28 January against a stubborn Petroc team. The game was eventually won 1 – 0 with only seven minutes of time left—Lucy Brown with a terrific strike on the edge of the penalty area. This was the first 11 a side match the team had since their 2 – 1 deficit loss to Richard Huish over the festive season.

The team were rejuvenated with the return of Cait Berry, following her break out recovering from a nose operation. It was clearly evident in the first quarter of the game that Cait was a highly valuable player in the team with some neat touches and penetrative runs against the Petroc defence.

Unfortunately the game was marred by terrible conditions of strong winds and irritable rain, alongside a below standard of passing and controlled touches, which made it very difficult for Team BC to get going and into their stride. Long periods of territory were dominated in the Petroc defensive third but a lack of creativity and opportunities were the only outcomes. Despite the creativity lacking within the team, hard work and determination was evident throughout. Charlotte Cross putting in a ‘player of the match performance’ as a result of her efforts to continue to win the ball back off of the countering Petroc side.

A final mention for the Team BC goalkeeper who did well to stay focused throughout the game even though she was barely troubled. However Delenn was required to close down the Petroc no. 9 who was through on goal (twice) only to be denied comfortably from good positioning off of her line.

“It was fantastic to get a win and into the next round of the cup. It’s been a horrible time since our last outing to Richard Huish, having lost that game and not being able to amend ourselves until now. Although the quality of passing and control of the ball lacked today, I honestly cannot fault anyone involved the team today for their efforts. There were some real shifts of work rate out there today in horrible conditions. Some of the females only play Wednesday’s so for them it was their first game in a long time.”
