Bridgwater Town Reserves beat Cutters 4 – 2 in their final league of the season to make it 6 wins in a row. The win sees them secure 7th position—their highest league finish since winning the title back in 2010—with their youngest squad in the clubs history.

The game started with the visitors dominating much of the early possession and territory, but an organised Bridgwater defence led by the excellent Josh White held firm and limited the away side to speculative long distance shots and set pieces.

Towards the end of the first half Bridgwater changed their shape to match the opposition and instantly looked more threatening.  Bridgwater took the lead 5 minutes before the break when Lee Villis combined with Matt Connick and Villis fired in an excellent shot in to the bottom corner. A minute later, Bridgwater should have increased their advantage when Villis robbed the away defence, squared the ball to Connick, but his shot squirmed wide of the far post.

Bridgwater came flying out of the traps in the second half and doubled their lead with 50 minutes gone when Harry Horton's corner was converted by a Josh White header.

It was 3 – 0 only a minute later but the pacey front two of Matt Connick and Lee Villis combined once again and Villis doubled his personal tally by rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home from a tight angle.

Despite the scoreline, the away team didn't give up and got themselves a foot hold in the game after they converted a penalty. This spurred them on and they scored again a couple of minutes later when the Bridgwater back line failed to deal with a ball in to the box and the striker fired home from close range.

With the game finely poised and momentum firmly with the away team, Bridgwater substitute forward Tom Holder saw his close range shot well saved by the away goalkeeper. Moments later however, Holder made amends and sealed the points for Bridgwater when he burst through and finished with an audacious chip.

Manager Luke Buckingham said,

“I'm sure that was an excellent game to watch for the neutral, with plenty of goalmouth action in both areas. For some parts of the game we were excellent and going forward we looked like we could score at will, but at 3 – 0 we shouldn't have let them back in the game. Credit must go to Cutters however as they kept battling and throwing players forward and it caused us problems.

“Our oldest player today was just 22 and we lacked that bit of know how to close the game out. Despite that, to finish with 6 wins in a row is a magnificent achievement and we are hoping for some big support on Thursday for our league cup final versus Shirehampton at Street FC.”
