Floristry students at Bridgwater College have had an extremely busy schedule recently by entering national competitions and winning awards in just one week.

Two students, Kirsty McLeary and Lucille Ainsworth, competed in the World Skills UK heats in Dorset while the Level 2 group enjoyed a day of skill building with the 2013 RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year, Laura Leong. The group were given tips on exactly what the Judges Guild look for when judging prestigious competitions.

The following day Bridgwater College hosted the second round of the SmithersOasis Floral Products College Competition. Seven Level 2 and Level 3 students from the Bridgwater and Yeovil Centres competed against other Colleges for a place in the final. Joanne Logan, Kirsty McCleary and Jenny Miller qualified and will compete for the title in June at Washington Tyne and Wear.

Finally, Angela Robertson, who is studying Level 3 Floristry, attended an award ceremony at the SS Great Britain in Bristol where she was awarded a City & Guilds Medal of Excellence. Only 100 Medal of Excellence awards are presented by City & Guilds across all subject areas each year so it is a great accolade to receive one of these prestigious awards.

Jacqui Weaver, Programme Manager for Floristry at Bridgwater College said,

“We are so proud of the achievements of our students again this year and for all of these events to come together in one week shows just how confident and capable our students are to ensure they achieve success despite their hectic schedule. I wish those going onto the next stages of the competitions great success and we will continue to support them on their journey and future career path.”

Student Angela Robertson added,

“I am very pleased and honoured to win a Medal of Excellence from City & Guilds. I would like to thank my tutor, Jacqui Weaver, for putting my portfolio forward and for helping me achieve such a high standard of work. Studying at Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre has been a great experience which I have thoroughly enjoyed.”

Jenny Miller, who studies floristry at Bridgwater College’s Yeovil Centre said,

“I was so shocked when the judge announced my name. My family were there to support me and became very emotional when the results were given out. I’m looking forward to the finals and hope to use this experience next year when I progress onto the Level 3 in Floristry.”
