ABP Food Group are looking to take on 12 new Butchery apprentices at their Langport site in September 2015.
The largest processor of beef in the UK and Ireland, ABP handle around 1million cattle each year and supply some of Europe’s largest supermarkets. As part of their commitment to sustainability, they are now working with Bridgwater College to develop a Butchery Apprenticeship programme that offers young people locally a career as a butcher whilst they gain a recognised qualification and job-related skills.
The new Apprenticeship scheme covers a number of butchery skills including trimming and de-boning, as well as food hygiene, working with others, Health and Safety and quality assurance. Amanda Brent, from ABP Beef said,
“We are committed to recruiting young people locally, but it is not easy for them to acquire the necessary skills. This new Apprenticeship programme with Bridgwater College will allow them to learn this traditional trade whilst earning a salary, and represents an excellent opportunity for someone who wants a career based on practical skills.
“The apprentices will earn a good wage, and those who show they have the talent to progress will see their wages rising quickly. We will be holding interviews for the 12 Apprenticeships in June and August, and are keen to talk to anyone who is interested or wants to find out more.”
Julie Harris, Programme Manager for Food & Drink at Bridgwater College said,
“This is an exciting opportunity for local people that offers a real career at the end of the Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship will start in September, with the training being delivered jointly by ABP Food Group UK and Bridgwater College. ABP are very committed to this and have 12 real job opportunities at the end. What’s more, they have committed to running this programme year on year.”
