Team BC Elite Rugby recovered from a slow start to earn a comfortable win over a talented Yeovil College side in the Natwest Vase competition.
The home side controlled the game early on but could not break the Yeovil line. They were made to pay for this as the first try went against them, undone by some poor body angles at the breakdown, which allowed the travelling side to gain the turnover ball, which they executed superbly to score.
The hosts again, found themselves under increasing pressure under the posts, giving away a penalty which was converted and left the home side down to 14 men. Yeovil kept the intensity on their opposition and capitalised on having the extra man, showing good width and hands in order to score a second try in the corner.
This seemed to spur Team BC into life and they were able to notch up a couple of tries as half-time approached, the first from Callum Gillard who ran an excellent line to break through, before Ethan Lawson showed good pace and footwork to add a second. Gillard converted both, taking in the home side one point behind the visitors at the interval, 14 – 15.
Team BC were much improved in the second half with Fly-half Tim Goodwin showing outstanding spatial awareness with a deft chip behind the Yeovil defensive line, which was gathered by Conor Howard who touched down under the post.
This was quickly followed by an interception try for Taylor Galloway, before Lawson scored his second to round off the afternoon and secure a place in the next round. A special mention must go to Gillard for 100% kicking success, as well as Lewis Parker, who put in an excellent shift on his first start of the season.
Head Coach Roy Davies said,
“This was a good result for us with a young group of players. Massive credit to Yeovil College, who made life difficult for us in the first half, but I was pleased with how the boys regrouped at half-time and showed an excellent understanding of space and going forward in the second. As always, there’s still lots to work on but if the boys keep sticking together as they are, we can only continue to learn and improve”.
Final Score: Team BC Rugby 35 – 15 Yeovil College
Try Scorers: Callum Gillard, Ethan Lawson (x2), Conor Howard, Taylor Galloway
Conversions: Callum Gillard (x5)
