Netball report: Team BC vs Petroc | Bridgwater & Taunton College

After a two week break, Team BC’s Netball team faced a top of the league clash against Petroc of Devon.

Team BC knew they had to get a foothold early in the game, so the first quarter saw determination from each individual on court and the home side took the lead. Impressive court play by all enabled the home team to increase their lead over Petroc throughout the first quarter by a considerable amount, 18 – 7.

With a strong team spirit, Team BC took the court with the same energy as the first 15 minutes to replicate the success of the first quarter. However, Petroc had stepped up their game, enabling them to pressurise Team BC's court play and force errors. The defensive duo, Rheanne Lee (GD) and Saskia Middleton (GK) used switches and communication to create numerous turnovers, ensuring Team BC keep their well-deserved lead, with the half time score; 28 – 22 in the home sides favour.

Half time saw changes made to both teams, to enable fresh legs on court due to the intensity of the game. The third quarter was very evenly matched, with two of Petroc's key attacking players taking control, whilst Laura Gibson (WD) and Alisha Garderner (C), worked tirelessly to pressurise these two players and successfully dictate their movement on court. However, these players proved to be very dominant and enable Petroc to close the score line to 35 – 33 going into the fourth and deciding quarter.

The final quarter saw fatigue begin to set in on both teams but this did not affect the play of Team BC. Countless interceptions were made by the defence, providing the home side opportunities for those vital points. Although, Petroc were also chancing the game and were able to force many errors, making the game goal for goal. The final seconds saw a final chance for a home win as the ball made in into Team BC's attacking circle, but unfortunately, time was on neither side and the game ended in a draw, 45 – 45.

Coach Sammy Kemmish said,

“This was a fair result for the fight and effort put in from both sides. Without a doubt, one of the best team performances for Team BC this season against top of the league.”
