Students studying Business, Management and Computing at Bridgwater College have ventured out into the business world recently as part of their work experience placements to gain first-hand experience in a range of industries to support their course studies.

Work placements play a vital role in the students’ development, not only with their practical experiences, but also their personal growth. The experience helps students to develop personally, for example, increased confidence, independence and communication, as well as practical skills such as customer service, team work and time management. It can also help them recognise a future career.

Janade Gainard, of Westonzoyland, who spent the week working for Barclays Bank.

The group found experience in a variety of businesses, including finance, law, customer service, human resources, marketing, product development and banking.  Barclays bank, Natwest Bank, Hinkley Point, Morrison’s DHL, Mulberry, Bristol Audi and Citizens Advice Bureau were just a few of the companies to offer placements to the College.

On reflection of his work placement at Clarks Village, Tom Briffett of Bridgwater said,

“I gained an overwhelming understanding of the day to day operations at larks Village. I was also able to sit in on a meeting between inbound logistics and the merchandising team at Clarks HQ which was really insightful. The experience helped me gain a better idea of logistics, which is now making me think of pursuing a possible career in the industry.”

Janade Gainard, of Westonzoyland, who spent the week working for Barclays Bank, added,

“I really enjoyed interacting with the customers, it makes the hard work worthwhile when you see what you can do for them. It has been the most amazing and successful week, I’ve learnt so much.”

Abbie Brogden, Work Placement Co-ordinator at Bridgwater College said,

“Work experience brings to life classroom based education in a real world environment by letting our students put into practice the practical skills they have learnt on their course. The students have really embraced the work experience programme and have shown enthusiasm in choosing their placements, as well as putting remarkable effort and pride in their work. We are grateful to all the businesses that have offered our students placements as they play a vital role in their progression.”
