Plantforce Rentals recently sponsored a taster programme for Jobcentre Plus clients who are interested in the construction industry. The event, Go Construct!, was hosted by Bridgwater College’s Construction Skills and Innovation Centre in Cannington.

Six candidates took part in the pilot programme that aimed to give an overview of just a few of the career paths available within the construction industry that they may not have considered previously. The programme included locating and repairing water leaks, steel fixing and plant operations.

Hannah Ranby, Commercial Training Manager at the Construction Skills and Innovation Centre said,

“Today has been about giving the candidates the opportunity to try out some different construction skills. After the event we will continue to support the Jobcentre to offer future training to those candidates who demonstrate an interest and the potential to progress. This type of event is a good way of getting the word out to the local community about what we offer here at the centre and, after the success of today, we plan to run the programme again in the near future.”

Gill Knight, Employer Advisor for Jobcentre Plus said,

“Each month the Jobcentre promotes a particular industry sector, the focus in March was Construction. We worked in partnership with the trainers at the Construction Skills and Innovation Centre to offer a fun but useful day to our clients. All candidates that take part have shown an interest in the sector, and this event has been a real eye opener for them. It’s given the group a realistic view of the demand there is for well-trained operators in the industry. The staff have been fantastic, they have been very helpful and provided such a great opportunity.”

Geoff Wyatt, Project Manager at Hinkley Point C (HPC) for Plantforce added,

“There is a huge shortage of plant operators in the industry, so to have the opportunity to encourage more people into the industry at this level is a great idea. The candidates today have a fantastic opportunity in this area with HPC so close, now couldn’t be a better time to get involved in plant operations. I hope that after today they will be inspired to carry on into the industry.”

Jason Mountain, who took part in the programme, reflected on his day,

“I was interested in finding out more information about construction. After doing warehouse work for the past 18 years I wanted a change, today has definitely motivated me to do this.”

Chris Rothery also signed up for the programme,

“I was recently made unemployed. The Jobcentre told me about the taster programme so I thought I’d give it a go to see if it would suit me. Construction is a good industry to get in to. I particularly enjoyed the steel fixing and plant operations, I’ll definitely be looking into both areas.”

Jobcentre Plus clients who are interested in attending a course like this should speak to their Jobcentre Plus Advisor.
