Students studying Business at Bridgwater College had a lucky escape recently when they faced questioning by His Honour Judge Horton at Bristol Crown Court.
The experience was part of a joint initiative between Bridgwater College and the Bristol Crown Court Service, to introduce students to the working of the courts and the British judiciary as part of a student outreach programme.
The College’s Business programme prides itself on a wide variety of study units, including an introduction to the aspects of the British legal system, and there is no better way to learn than to witness first-hand the judicial system in practice.
His Honour Judge Horton, took time out of his busy schedule to reveal some of the procedures of Crown Court trials. The students were then given the opportunity to undergo a very informative round of questioning from the witness box. To complete their day, the group were able to observe live court proceedings from the public galleries in any of the ten court rooms within the complex.
Student Tom Folland was inspired by the visit, and said,
“I was captivated by the trip, and thankfully, my tutors managed to arrange a more in depth work placement for me. I spent a week shadowing the court clerks as a Court Marshal, gaining valuable insight into the mechanics of the British legal system. This is certainly going to be one of my career options, once I complete my Extended Diploma in Business.”
