Horticulture and Countryside Management students at Bridgwater College helped to restore several willow structures at Enmore Primary school.

Horticulture and Countryside Management students from Bridgwater College who restored the willow structure at Enmore Primary School.

The willow structures are a popular feature in schools, however they do require regular maintenance. The students undertook the practical task of weaving and cutting the willow to restore the original shape. The work carried out by the group has not only benefitted the local primary school, but will count towards the estate skills unit within their College course.

Tom Cunningham, Course Leader for Horticulture at Bridgwater College said,

“The students really enjoyed working on the willow domes, it was very rewarding for them to see them restored to their original shape. The structures are a popular feature with the school children, so they were very excited to be able to use them again. Projects like this offer a valuable experience for the students, as well as providing an equally valuable service to the local community.”

Duncan MacRae, Head Teacher at Enmore School added,

“The students from Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre have done a marvellous job pruning, weaving and generally maintaining our living willow structures so that they can be enjoyed by the whole school. They have worked hard and achieved great results. All five classes at Enmore School really look forward to playing in the willow each summer term; it is a highlight of their playtimes on the field.”
