Business and Travel students at Bridgwater College completed their final work experience placements recently. The students ventured out into their respective placements to gain first-hand experience and skills to enhance their employability as they begin the new chapter in their lives.

Georgia Ham, who completed her work experience in the Visual department at Debenhams, Taunton.

The development of students is extremely important and work placements play a vital role, not only with their practical experiences, but also their personal growth. Work placements help students to improve in confidence and independence, as well as giving them practical skills such as customer service, team work and time management. It can also help them to identify a future career.

The students gained experience in a range of industries, from finance and marketing, customer service and human resources, to banking, tourism, hotels and journalism. They secured placements in well-known locations such as Barclays Bank, John Lewis, Center Parcs, Aldi, Holiday Inn, Debenhams, Giraffe Media, NFU Mutual and Bristol Temple Meads as well as many more. One Travel and Tourism student, Charlotte Hockey, even had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans where she completed her 2 week placement at Ascension Chamber of Commerce.

The students did a fabulous job within the work place, impressing managers and staff alike. Business student Georgia Ham, worked strongly with the visual team at Debenhams in Taunton, where her eye of detail won high praise from the team, and whose work is still displayed in store now. Camilla Jordan, who is studying Level 3 Travel and Tourism, worked with Giraffe Media on their wedding magazine Wedding Ideas. She impressed the team with her work ethic and journalistic skills. Camilla was tasked with writing an article for the magazine which was printed in the May 2016 issue.

Student Georgia Ham, who is studying the Level 3 Business course said,

“I am really pleased I had the opportunity to work within the visual department at Debenhams, it was great to be hands on and get creative. I didn’t know what I wanted to do once I finished College but since completing work experience I have decided that this is the career I want.”

Abbie Brogden, Work Placement Coordinator for Business, Management and Computing at Bridgwater College said,

“We are grateful to all the businesses that have participated in offering our students works placement as they play a vital role in our students learning. I am so pleased with the progress the students have made as part of the work experience programme this year. As our year 2 Business and Travel students leave Bridgwater College it is extremely important that they have the opportunity to build relationships with employers to enhance their future career prospects. Many of the students stood out with great feedback from our employers, well done to all.”
