Students studying Horse Management at Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Cannington Centre were recently given the opportunity to visit the highly prestigious Horse of the Year Show at the Birmingham NEC.

The Horse of the Year Show is the finale to the equine industry’s showing year and the climax to the domestic show jumping year. It is a place to which all horse owners and riders aspire, with more than 1,600 horses and ponies, 1,500 competitors and 65,000 spectators attending during the five day show.

The students were able to watch a range of showing classes and international show jumping, side saddle demonstrations, the musical drive of the heavy horse and mounted games championships in the main arenas. They also visited the many trade stands, which enabled them to network with industry professionals and find out about advances and opportunities within the industry.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management student, Harriet Lacey said,

“The Horse of the Year Show was a truly amazing experience. It gave me an insight into how big shows are run and maintained, I enjoyed the shopping too! I found it very useful, it gave me an insight to which types of businesses and organisations there are in the industry, which links very closely to our course, such as business and the fitness and care of competition horses.”
