Stuart Aplin, a student at Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Yeovil Centre has recently won a fishing series after competing in the Ilminster Juniors Summer League.

Stuart, aged 16 of Ilminster is a Level 1 Animal Care student based at the Yeovil Centre. He has a real passion for fishing and has been participating in the sport with his dad and brother all his life. Alongside his studies, Stuart last year started taking part in competitions and proved his talent wasn’t just a hobby!

Stuart signed up to take part took part in the Ilminster Juniors Summer League and took part in six matches during the months of July and August. The matches took place at Dillington Pond where he won the series by catching fish such as Rudd, Roach, Gudgeon and perch as well as chub-lets.

Stuart, hooked them all by fishing shallow on the pole with light elastic and a 4 by 10 size float with a size 20 hook. His prize for winning the league was £30 worth of fishing tackle.

Going forward, Stuart is hoping to continue taking part in competitions but will now have to compete in the adult section as he has now become too old for the 16 and under category. Fishing is currently just a hobby alongside his studies, however Stuart isn’t ruling out working in the fisheries industry when he finishes college.
