Students studying Horticulture at Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Cannington Centre were given the opportunity to visit a commercial strawberry glasshouse near Yeovil recently, as an introduction to crop production.
Global Berry Ltd is a commercial producer of strawberries for some of the country’s major supermarket chains. The group were given a tour of the facilities, which included a demonstration of their new high-tech ‘fertigation’ equipment. This equipment controls fertiliser application through the watering system to ensure the best quality fruit and the highest yields.
Tom Cunningham, Course Leader for Horticulture at Bridgwater & Taunton College, said,
“The students really benefitted from visiting a local commercial grower. They were able to see the process of large scale food production, as well as look at highly technological glasshouse equipment. Engaging our students with local employers is key in complimenting the course and facilities at our Cannington Centre.”
Fiona Kearn, Grower Manager at Global Berry Ltd added,
“It is great to see students being introduced to the commercial horticultural sector. It is a real problem in the UK getting enthusiastic younger generations to join the commercial sector. It seems to be perceived as a low paid, monotonous part of the industry, however with the advances in technology, robotic machinery, introductions of biological control systems and need for managers it is a very exciting place to be.
“There is a wealth of knowledge needed including engineers, agronomists, growers, staff managers, and qualified health and safety personnel. We are enthusiastic to offer work experience and information to anybody keen to join the industry and look forward to continuing visits from Bridgwater and Taunton College.”
