Bridgwater & Taunton College student Charlotte Johnson, has been called up in to the ECFA Women’s National Team. Johnson, who has been the number two goalkeeper for Yeovil Town Ladies FC, who recently won promotion to FA Women’s Super League one this season, will compete in her first fixture this coming weekend, at the Etihad Campus in Manchester.
Johnson will join players from all over the country, to form the national side, which will see fixtures against other FA Women’s Super League sides, along with fixtures against the Independent Schools FA and the Welsh Colleges side, before a tour to Estonia later in the academic year.
Through the educational partnership with Bridgwater & Taunton College, Johnson trains daily, as well as studying on site, in her chosen academic course, and has been able to develop in a variety of ways, both in the classroom and on the field.
Bridgwater & Taunton College are the only college in the county to be playing in the Category Two Elite League, meaning players on the programme, are being challenged appropriately by good competitive opposition, which in turn will help with the individual’s development.
Speaking about her call up, Johnson said,
“Bridgwater & Taunton College have been able to support me, alongside my club football with Yeovil Town Ladies FC. Being able to train daily, whether that is on the field, in the gym, or specifically to my position with my amazing club goalkeeping coach Tony Rich, it has enabled me to get to this level.
“Although this is a big step, I know that I am lucky to have massive support behind me, including my very patient boss, Charlie, at Groves Nurseries in Bridport who lets me have time off when it's needed. I will give the ECFA everything I have and continue to develop at the same time.”
Speaking on behalf of Bridgwater and Taunton College, Sam Reilly, Head of Sports, Outdoor Education and Public Services said,
“I am absolutely delighted that Charlotte has been selected as part of the ECFA National Women's squad and this is a real credit to her determination, drive and ambition to be the very best player she can be.
“Charlotte's commitment to balance her academic study with her football is outstanding and she has quickly become an independent student who takes real pride in her studies.
“I have no doubt that Charlotte will use this opportunity to further her footballing prowess and be a role model to her fellow students, showing what dedication and talent can achieve.”
Nicola Cousins, who is a first team player at Yeovil Town Ladies FC and UEFA B License coach working on the female programme at Bridgwater & Taunton College added,
“This is fantastic for Charlotte. Watching her development through the Yeovil and College set up has been a pleasure. She's now progressing with the additional sessions here at Bridgwater & Taunton College and she brings nothing but commitment and dedication to every session, alongside some top class saves in our games!
“This is a great achievement for Charlotte and will be the start of a successful career. From everyone involved we wish Charlotte the best of luck for the weekend.”
