Students studying the Level 3 Animal Management course at Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Yeovil Centre recently visited Devon’s top animal attraction, Paignton Zoo.

Animal Management group at Paignton Zoo

As part of their course, students are assessed on units that include an Exotic Animal Care unit and a Managing Accommodation unit. The annual study tour to the zoo, that is the home to more than 2,000 creatures in six animal habitats, gave the group the perfect opportunity to understand more about the behaviours and habitats of a huge variety of animals. The students were particularly excited to visit the new family of lions that are currently housed at the zoo.

Students were able to study the environments that the animals were housed in, specifically looking at how it affected the welfare of the animals, whilst also taking into account the requirements needed to maintain the animals whilst in the exhibit.

Student, Amber Pierce said,

“Paignton zoo was really good, it was nice to see the family of lions they have, but I also loved seeing how the Gorillas interacted with each other. It has really helped to put our lessons into context.”
