In March 2017, The Walled Gardens at Cannington welcomed Wincanton Primary School for a workshop dedicated to flower pollination.

The day began with a garden tour of the grounds and glasshouses looking at the lifecycle of a plant, paying particular attention to seed disbursal.

Activities and games were played throughout the day to illustrate the importance of pollination and dispersal. This involved looking at the different pollinators, including wind power, bees and other insects responsible for this important task and how it can affect the food we eat. In the glasshouse the children engaged in activities such as seed-sowing and created their own hand-made pots to take back to school.

The school curriculum requires the children to have an understanding of the lifecycle of a plant, and functions of a plant/flower – including water transportation, photosynthesis and pollination/seed dispersal, so it is important to be able to illustrate this in a practical way.

Teacher Kate Hinton from Wincanton Primary School said,

“The children really enjoyed their day at the gardens and were fully immersed into all of the activities that the Walled Gardens of Cannington organised. Emma was extremely helpful and accommodating to our needs and provided a National Curriculum based day with a few surprises for the children to enjoy.”
