Bridgwater & Taunton College student Kieran Sussex has successfully passed selection for the British Army as a Dog Handler.

Kieran was one of the first students to complete the Bridgwater & Taunton College Military Preparation course in 2017, and from day one, he was sure he wanted to become a British Army Dog Handler.

Kieran worked hard on the course and alongside his studies, he volunteered in a local dog grooming business as well as competing in MMA contests.

Kieran said,

“The Military Preparation course has really helped me gain the skills and knowledge to progress in my career. One year ago, I didn’t have any idea about what the Army did or who they were, but this course has taught me the basic knowledge and soldiering skills to understand, which helped me gain a place as a Dog Handler. I am now off to the Army Training Centre Pirbright for 14 weeks, and I feel prepared for the challenges ahead.

The theory side to my qualification was the most interesting because everything I learnt was new to me. I really enjoyed the teamwork and communication lessons because I was able to build strong relationships with other students on the course, and have since made friendhips for life. I loved having the Rifles Training Team come in and do fieldcraft skills with us. What I have learnt will really help me in my new role in the Army.

I can't wait to join the 1st Military working Dog Handling Squadron in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and I will be doing my trade training at the Animal Defence Centre Melton Mowbray, where I will learn the skills I need to do my job.

The RAVC currently has a pivotal role to play in Defence, providing the handling and training expertise for a range of Military Working Dog (MWD) classifications. Veterinary Officers use their expertise to command and manage soldiers, MWDs, equipment as well as being employed clinically to maintain the health and welfare of the MWAs.”

Kieran was keen to gain as much experience as possible on his journey to become a Dog Handler, this included meeting police dogs and their trainers from Avon and Somerset Police. He attended all the residentials the course offers and worked hard on his fitness to reach the required standard to pass selection.

We wish Kieran all the best in his training. If you would like to study Military Preparation at Bridgwater & Taunton College, apply online or speak to one of our advisors on 01278 441234.
