Gain a qualification while earning a salary. Apprenticeships provide the perfect route for learning practical, on-the-job skills, as well as furthering your education and gaining a formal qualification.
What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are training programmes, where you work and learn. You are in a job working alongside experienced staff to gain specific skills, knowledge and behaviours that are required for that industry. Many of these cannot be learnt purely in the classroom, making apprenticeships an attraction to employers. The training will be delivered from a provider such as College, where you will attend either once a week, on a block release basis or you will only be work-based and assessed accordingly.
Why should I consider an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are available to you as long as you are 16-65 years old. This means, whether you are just starting your career or looking to train in a different industry, it is an option for you. Apprentices are thought to earn in excess of £100,000 more throughout their lifetime than their untrained colleagues. If that’s not reason enough to think of enrolling, then consider the prospect of earning an average of £170 a week (depending on the employer and role), even while you’re training. It’s not all about money of course, but who wouldn’t want to gain practical vocational experience alongside formal qualifications?
How long is an apprenticeship?
The duration of an apprenticeship is dependent on the programme and level you are wanting to do. The minimum amount of time is 12 months and the maximum length of the programme is 48 months.
How much does an apprentice get paid?
Apprentices are paid at a rate negotiated with the employer and stated in the terms and conditions of employment. The wage must comply with the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices. Click here for current rates. For those who are aged 19 or over who are in their first year, the apprenticeship wage can apply, but on the second year of their programme, they are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age.
