Team BTC hockey took on Exeter College in the first round of the mixed cup. On a very windy day at the ‘Sandra Wickham’ stadium, it was Team BTC who came in to the game eager to make the new season a successful and extremely positive one. The game started slowly with both teams finding their feet, BTC were battling well early and holding their own despite a very strong and experienced Exeter side. With Exeter having most of the possession it was BTC who needed to ensure they kept in shape to counter attack.
Midway through the first half, a darting run from Hopkins exposed the space and created an opportunity which forced the opposing goalkeeper to make his only save of the game. A lot of fine saves from Downward and fantastic defending from the back made it look like both teams were heading in to the break even. However just before half time it was Exeter who broke the deadlock.
Following an inspiring half time team talk that focused on ball retention, patience and ensuring positional play was a priority, BTC started the second half as they started the first; strong, energetic and with a real desire to get something from the game. With some good combinations and link up play in midfield from Warren, Mcelroy, Cernikovs and Little, they still couldn’t quite open up the Exeter defence and create more chances. Fatigue started to kick in and due to a couple of scrappy mistakes playing the ball out from the back it was Exeter who capitalised and added a second goal. Downward continued to make some brilliant saves in between the sticks but despite Team BTC’s late efforts and hard work, Exeter went on the grab a third goal to see the visitors win the game 3-0.
