Bridgwater & Taunton College’s (BTC) Apprenticeship programme with ByLor is an outstanding example of an industry/education partnership that directly addresses workforce needs whilst also creating exceptional career and progression opportunities for individuals.

BTC and ByLor are delighted that the programme has been selected by TES (Times Educational Supplement) as a finalist in the Apprenticeship Programme of the Year category of the TES FE Awards 2019.

ByLor – responsible for the main civil engineering contract for the nuclear new build at Hinkley Point C (HPC) – will need 4000 construction trade workers on site at peak, including 1200 steel fixers and 1200 form workers.

BTC has moved swiftly and strategically to address this, working in close collaboration with ByLor and awarding organisations to develop brand new nationally-recognised qualifications that deliver the practical skills and behavioural competencies that this highly regulated project needs.

The current cohort of Apprentices comprises a diverse mix, with 50% being local individuals who have left poorly-paid positions to seize this once-in-a-generation opportunity to upskill/re-train. They now have a clear line of sight to well-paid, permanent, full-time and sustainable employment on Europe’s largest construction project.

ByLor has committed to three cohorts per year for the next three years, creating invaluable ‘backfill’ opportunities for others, as individuals migrate to the HPC project.

The TES FE Awards 2019 winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in March 2019.
