Forty inspirational Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) students and their achievements have been celebrated at the Value Added Awards.

BTC’s Value Added Awards take place twice a year and enable staff to recognise Further Education (FE) students from across the curriculum who have made significant progress, overcome considerable challenges, or shown excellent personal attributes in the course of their studies. Just two students can be nominated from each campus by each curriculum area.

Although the difficulties faced by each nominee are often unique, every student showed remarkable determination, adopting a positive attitude and working extremely hard to achieve their personal or academic goals. Many gained high grades or sought-after work placements. In addition, the students showed an excellent approach to in-college learning, often being described as supportive of both peers and staff. One even used wellbeing knowledge learned as part of the BTC Advantage scheme to help a fellow student find the support they needed. Nominating tutors said they were proud to have these students in their classes and they were a pleasure to teach.

Level 3 Nuclear student TJ Matthews said

I am very grateful to have won the award and proud of the lovely words my tutor has said about me. I’d like to thank all my teachers who have supported me and I am looking forward to the year ahead.

Lessa Hayes, mum to award winner Will, said

After finding out that Will had been nominated for a Value Added Award, as his mum, I felt full of pride. Will only joined the College in September, so to be commended for his commitment and excellent progress makes me immensely proud. After such a turbulent and tough couple of years with the disturbance of Covid-19, will has transitioned in to college life with maturity and ease. I hope Will is as proud of his achievement as I am of him.

Andy Berry, Principal and Chief Executive of BTC said

The Added Value awards are about recognising the personal journey and individual challenges faced and overcome by some of our students, hearing their stories is both humbling and inspirational. Covid-19 has had an impact on all our students, however, they have demonstrated courage and resilience. What they have achieved is truly incredible and they have a great deal to be proud of.

We are enormously proud of them. Many of their tutors said that they had no doubt they would go far in life and excel in their chosen careers, I wholeheartedly agree and look forward to hearing about their next steps.
