Three members of the Bridgwater & Taunton College Men’s 1 Football team have represented Taunton Town in the Southern League Cup Quarter Final.
Taunton Town won 4-1, but unfortunately led to injuries for some BTC players. Acey Mead scored but picked up an injury. Lewis Smith also aggravated a previous injury, but skipper Mike Murphy was fortunately fighting fit. Providing opportunities for students is however a positive measure and one we strive to continue alongside their core studies.
Next day, BTC once again took on Exeter College, but unable to field the same team that had beaten the side the previous week. This led to a 2-0 defeat, but BTC remains committed to encouraging players to strive and be part of other teams alongside their studies.
Exeter, who before the previous week had only lost once all season, are having a good season. They sit second in Group 8 of the Cat1 league and always present a serious challenge. This fixture was no different as they started brightly. Team BTC managed to contain them for good periods, with Chivers converted to striker, Neenan and Bfupa alongside as the side looked to rekindle the form from last week.
Despite some great defending from Murphy and Watts, the loss of Jennings and Smith early on required more juggling of personnel as players were moved around to cover the changes. Exeter posed a dynamic attacking threat which eventually broke down our left side to cross low and finish. As the game continued, our visitors possessed more continuity in attack and, despite some excellent defending from Team BTC, a second goal was well deserved.
There were a few periods of positive team play and some sound individual performances, however, with consistency, Mike Murphy was Man of the Match – defensively resilient along with composure on the ball.
