Springboard Somerset Courses
Skill Up Somerset is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to increasing the county’s skill-base. They have launched the Springboard500 campaign, which aims to get 500 individuals from Somerset aged 18 and over to sign-up for short, skill-enhancing training courses.
For employers, employees and the self-employed, the cash and time commitment of some training courses can be a barrier, but Springboard courses (offered with the help of the European Social Fund) are totally free and short in duration.
They can act as a literal springboard onto further training, an apprenticeship or an HND for example, or can be an end in themselves. For individuals, they offer a taster of what training can bring, and for employers they can allow them to identify workers most likely to benefit from extra training.
Courses are available in various sectors including agriculture, health and social care, retail, hospitality, digital and business administration. Have a look at what is available below and register online.
Springboard courses are perfect for those who:
- Haven’t been in a formal learning environment for a few years.
- Want, or need, to develop skills in a new area of the business.
- Wish to study at a higher level but are unsure about the commitment required.
- Hope to enrol onto longer term training i.e. an apprenticeship, but aren’t sure about the commitment required.
- Are seeking career progression.
By completing a Springboard unit, you could:
- Progress onto Apprenticeships, Traineeships or full certificates and diploma in the same or similar topics to extend your learning.
- Learn the skills necessary to secure the next role up in your organisation
- Obtain the certification needed to prove skills you use day to day
- Gain more responsibility in your current role due to newly learnt skills
- Learn new skills which allow you to innovate, progress or streamline the work you currently do
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible to join the Springboard programme, you must:
- Be over the age of 18.
- Be in employment, including full time, part-time and self-employment, but not anybody on a 0-hour contract.
- Be working for a business based within the Somerset County Council authority area.
- Have the right to work in the UK.
