South Devon 43 – 70 Team BTC

Team BTC secured their fourth win from five games this season with a victory away to South Devon College. Alex Taylor and Alfie King combined for 12 of BTC’s 16 points as BTC took an early 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

BTC upped the tempo and managed to pull away from South Devon to secure a half time 38-19 lead after clinical offense from Ayotomiwa Ajayi, who scored 10 points, and Charlie Brennan, who contributed 8 of the team’s 22 points in the second quarter.

South Devon came out strong in the third quarter but were unable to decrease the lead as BTC upped their effort on defence whilst increasing the lead by 1 point to 53-33. The fourth quarter presented an opportunity to work on offensive play and maintain defensive focus, and BTC were able to add 17 more points to the score to finish with a final result of 70-43.

This week’s leading point scorers were: Alfie King (18), Alex Taylor (13) and Ayotomiwa Ajayi (12).

Player of the game for BTC was Alex Taylor for showing his intelligence at both ends of the court, although a special mention to Ayotomiwa for some dazzling offensive play in the second quarter. His efforts of defence throughout the game and is willingness to take on feedback from the coaches and his team mates.

UCS Netball

UCS 33 – 38 AECC 2s

In the first ever UCS Netball game the team took on AECC. A very close game, with UCS leading the first quarter.

Unfortunately the team went down a few goals although they kept pushing and working well together. A positive result considering the team have never played together, and were up against a long-standing team who train regularly together. UCS lost the game 33-38.

A fantastic first game of the season for UCS Netball.

Player of the Match – Ellie Hooper

Men’s Rugby

Team BTC 36 – 0 Huish 2

A physical defensive display provided a platform for Team BTC to win against local rivals, Richard Huish. BTC flew out of the blocks with a score from close range for Jacob Parker, continuing his excellent scoring form.

This was quickly followed by a try from Rowan Traynor running in from the 22-metre line. Following this, a second try for Jacob Parker, making it 4 in 2 games, with BTC then finishing the half with another try after a strong break down the middle, culminating in the ball the being spun wide by Alfie Hodge for Jake Garrett to score under a pile of bodies.

Into the second half, BTC worked hard defensively for long periods and added to their try tally with Fin Sperring breaking clear, beating the last defender to score behind the posts.

Women’s Rugby

BTC took on their first ever regional 7’s tournament hosted by Huish College. Our first game was against the home team where BTC made dominant tackles and carries, seeing spectacular tries from Escott, Sully & Schoeman, with added extras from Robb. The team carried on their efforts and came out with 29-5 win for their first game.

Through the drive and determination gained from the previous game, BTC took on Exeter who gave a strong start to the game and made BTC defend for the majority of the time on-the-pitch. Despite the hard tackles we were putting in, it was Exeter who won 52-0.

Despite our first loss, BTC were determined to come back fighting for their third game against Weston. After a slow first half, BTC found their passion and worked well to gain possession back and carry the ball over the try line.

Brilliant tries from Richards x2, Escott & Thomas x3 and again Robb with the extra conversions making it a 42-0 win.

Our final game against SGS started with BTC defending most of the half and seeing half-time with a 20-0 score down.

BTC showcased some moments of talent which saw Richards break through the defence and secure a try. Unfortunately, SGS had the remainder of the game in attack and we ended the game with a 46-5 loss.

Players of the Tournament – Katie Escott & Poppy Richards.

Men’s 2 Football

Petroc 1 – 0 Team BTC

The Men’s 2 squad travelled to North Devon for a tightly fought contest. In a cagey start both teams cancelled themselves out as chances were at a premium. Despite BTC dominating possession, it wasn’t until the half-hour mark before Alfonso Almedia attempt was met by an excellent save from the Petroc keeper with a snap shot from the edge of the box.

The game was won through a scrappy goal as BTC failed to clear the ball down the left with the ball being forced home from 5 yards out. The second-half started with BTC again pressing forward.

Shots from Alfonso, Dylan Williams and Victor Matsitsiro tested the Petroc defence, but they stayed firm. Despite the result, it was a pleasing performance that showed the squad is developing into a fine footballing side.

Men’s Taunton Football

Weymouth 5 – 5 Team BTC

Our Taunton campus team played their first league game of the season yesterday. Finding themselves 4-2 down at half time, we fought back to draw 5-5.

The coaches changed shape at half time and it worked a treat, leading to us being level at 4-4 20 minutes into the second half. The hosts scored with 3 minutes to go but BTC resisted the loss with another equaliser, ending the game in a draw.

Goals from: Blake (3), Harry (1) and Max (1).

Women’s Football

It was a big week for Women’s Football in the South-West Regional tournament. After winning the national title with AoC last year, our first game was against Truro where goals from Charles and Mills led the charge, with a great assist from Mullins. This led to a 2-0 win to kick off the day.

This was followed by a 1-0 win over Richard Huish after a clever, defensive masterclass from Team BTC. We then continued our momentum in a 4-0 victory over Weston and ended the group stages with another good result against St Brendan’s.

Our unbeaten run and clean sheet throughout the group stages got us through to the semi-finals where we drew Exeter, the winners of the other group. Exeter started very well, however, Team BTC stayed calm and composed both in and out of possession to keep it level.

The game went into extra time with a few scoring opportunities from Team BTC, but it was Exeter who secured a goal to get through to the final, where they went on to beat SGS to win the tournament.

Player of the Day – Holly Daly, for both her composure on the ball throughout the tournament that allowed us to play out from the back, and for keeping a clean sheet throughout all the group stages.
