The University Centre Somerset Netball team, which was formed just a few months ago in the autumn term, travelled to Bournemouth yesterday for their first away fixture, and were delighted to pick up their first ever win against AECC.
The first quarter was fairly back and forth. However, the UCS centre court, Summer (C) and Ria (WD) did well to bring the ball down to the shooters while creating space for Tilly (WA) to receive the ball circle edge and pass strong feeds into the circle.
UCS ended the first quarter two goals down at 7:5.
For the second quarter, the team changed positions adding Katie (WD) to put pressure on the AECC attack while gaining interceptions, and Alisha (WA) who controlled the ball and made some great feeds into the circle. The changes helped the game flow and created more chances for UCS but AECC won the quarter, increasing their lead to 14:10.
UCS kept the same positions during the third quarter, which worked really well. The shooters Ellie (GS) and Lexi (GA) played with good movement and were working well together to balance out the circle. The team demonstrated great teamwork and won the quarter, levelling the score to 20:20.
The final quarter arrived and it was all to play for, with some brilliant defense from Fiona (GD) and Sofia (GK) winning interceptions and creating turnovers, allowing UCS to take the lead and eventually win the game, 28:34.
Congratulations to UCS Players of the Match, Lexi and Fiona, and to AECC Player of the Match, Sofia.
