Course Overview

This 12-week Skills Bootcamp in Welding has been designed in partnership with our industry partners and is for people who wish to retrain to gain practical skills and knowledge in welding and fabrication. You will study a range of practical and theoretical subjects that will prepare you for progression onto an Apprenticeship, further study or employment in this sector.

During this Skills Bootcamp there will be opportunities to hear from employers about current vacancies which you would then be encouraged to apply and interview for.

Studying in our brand new, state-of-the-art Welding Centre of Excellence (WCoE) at our Bridgwater campus you will learn the skills needed to prepare you for the exciting world of the engineering industry. This will enable you to develop the relevant skills, behaviours, knowledge and health and safety awareness training required to prepare you for working in the welding sector. You will also experience employer talks, potentially linked to HPC, to assist you with your progression in to employment. There will also be the opportunity for exposure to local manufacturing, welding and fabrication companies to experience the part welding plays, the work environment, the culture and the opportunities.

Welding & Fabrication

  • E Learning Welding underpinning knowledge programme
  • Virtual Reality Welding Techniques
  • Understanding and interpreting Engineering information
  • Engineering materials
  • Material preparation, measuring and marking out to specification
  • Shaping components using hand tools
  • Metal fabrication techniques and processes
  • Basic welding processes including MIG and TIG
  • Safe use of power tools in a workshop environment
  • An introduction to Orbital Welding
  • An introduction to NDT, welding inspection and quality processes

Health & Safety Training

  • A bespoke programme designed for those preparing to work in industry
  • H&S awareness
  • First Aid legislation, theory and practical techniques
  • Emergency first aid at work
  • Fire Awareness

Employability Skills

  • Employer engagement and industry experience
  • Writing a CV and interview skills
  • Working as part of a team
  • Work readiness preparation

Essential Computer Skills

  • An overview of digital literacy skills required for the workplace
  • Core skills to use Windows and Microsoft Office effectively
  • Portfolio building

The following PPE is provided by BTC on a loan basis:

  • TIG/MMA welding gloves
  • Leather apron
  • Head mounted welding screens
  • Air fed welding screens (available on a first come first served basis)
  • Safety glasses
  • Ear plugs
  • Safety boots
  • Proban overalls
  • AP3 Respiratory protection which protects against welding fumes will be provided.

PPE/RPE which is brought in by learners for use in our workshops will be checked to ensure it is suitable for welding related activities.

Assessment Methods

Assessment will be in various forms, including written portfolio, in-class tests and practical work. Observation of your practical work throughout the Skills Bootcamp will be used to assess your progress and knowledge.This will also highlight the confidence that you will have gained from the beginning of the course.

Progression Options

On completion of the Skills Bootcamp in Welding you will have gained the valuable skills necessary to progress on to an Apprenticeship or further study within this discipline.

You will gain technical knowledge in engineering and welding as well as skills to complement employability such as, interview techniques and preparing you for the world of work.

You will be in a good position to consider Apprenticeship opportunities or progress on to further qualifications. During the course there will be opportunities to hear from employers about current vacancies which you would then be encouraged to apply for subject to successful completion of the course.

Entry Requirements

This Skills Bootcamp in Welding is available to adults aged 19+, either in
work, looking for work or returning to the workforce. To take part in the free
programme, participants must live in Devon, Plymouth, Somerset or Torbay.

Course entry is subject to a successful telephone interview following your
application. Maths and English support will be given to those without a Level 2.

Learners that are already enrolled on a college course are not
eligible to apply for a place on the welding
bootcamp.
 

Attendance Requirements This Skills Bootcamp in Welding is aimed at those looking to progress into a welding job or achieve progression into a better welding job. We are working with local employers who will be interviewing Skills Bootcamp candidates for jobs either immediately or in the near future. This could be via an adult Apprenticeship route, but may be through direct employment into a full-time job. We will expect all candidates to attend interviews where they are made available. There will be distance learning and e-learning elements to this Skills Bootcamp. Learning materials for the employability and work-readiness skills will provide you with flexibility with your study, but you will still have tutor support when you need it. You will need to be able to access the e-learning modules via a internet connected PC, laptop, tablet or phone.
