Students Kaylan and Maisie, who study at Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC), managed to reach the London UK Finals of the globally recognised 2024 Junk Kouture competition.

Junk Kouture is a sustainable fashion competition. Open to 12–19-year-olds, it challenges young people to design, upcycle and create high-end kouture from recycled junk, before showcasing their design and representing their school on stages across the world.

It offers schools and students a creative way to become involved in active climate change initiatives, empowering them to tackle the climate crisis and embed lasting behavioural change.

In 2024, Content Creator and Model, Lise Pierron and Fashion Designer, Stephen McLaughlin, appeared on the judging panel – two well-respected names celebrated for their innovative approaches by the fashion community worldwide.

I found the experience fun and exciting; it allowed me to use techniques and practices that I have learnt during my time studying at college.

Rhona Austin, Course Leader, said,

The students worked so hard over many weeks creating an incredible showstopper garment from waste materials. It was a fantastic achievement to reach the UK finals and be recognised for their creativity and skill.
