A Level History and Criminology students at Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) participated in a poignant Holocaust Memorial commemoration.

Joining a webcast hosted by the Holocaust Educational Trust, the event marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Attendees were honoured to hear from Mala Tribich MBE, who provided students with a unique and powerful perspective on the horrors of the Holocaust, emphasising the human cost of prejudice and discrimination.

Mala Tribich MBE was only nine years of age when the Nazis invaded Poland. Mala and her family endured life in the ghetto and separation as they sought safety. Facing unimaginable hardship, including the loss of loved ones, forced labour, and concentration camps, Mala survived and was eventually reunited with her brother in England.

Mrs. Tribich’s resilience and determination led her to build a new life, and today she shares her testimony far and wide to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. Her personal account served as a stark reminder of the importance of remembrance and the ongoing need to challenge intolerance.

Liz Nuttall, Head of A Levels, said,

We were honoured to be a part of such an important event. Hearing Mrs. Tribich’s testimony first-hand allowed our students to connect with history on a deeper level, and understand the profound impact of these terrible events on individuals and wider society.

The webcast offered a valuable opportunity for reflection and discussion, leaving all thoughtful and contemplative about both history and its relevance today. By engaging, students have gained a greater understanding of the dangers of fascism, and the importance of promoting human rights and social justice.
