Bridgwater & Taunton College welcomed The Rt Hon. Lord Hunt of Kings Heath OBE, to the National College for Nuclear to discuss the role and importance of National Colleges.

Highlighting the role played by the National College for Nuclear (NCfN) in delivering skills in the nuclear sector of energy security and educational excellence, the Minister spoke to staff and students, exploring the cutting-edge facilities and programmes that NCfN boasts. He talked to the students, about their studies and motivations for working in the nuclear sector highlighting the importance of the sector for the future.

The Minister of State for Energy Security & Net Zero Rt Hon Lord Hunt OBE said,

“We are backing nuclear to boost our energy independence and grow the economy, with projects like Hinkley Point C supporting thousands of jobs in the local area.

“We need 40,000 extra workers by 2030 in our civil and nuclear defence sectors, and the National College for Nuclear, Southern Hub is leading the way in training up our next generation of welders, technicians and engineers.”

 

 

Matt Tudor, Vice Principal of Strategy and Partnerships at BTC said,

“It was wonderful to introduce Lord Hunt to staff and students, this visit underscores the national importance of the programmes we offer. Students were able to explain how they were preparing for their future in the various nuclear sectors. The National College for Nuclear is a prime example of how working in partnership with key employers, we can develop programmes that align with national needs, fostering an environment rich in opportunities for aspiring young people, here on our doorstep in Somerset. Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce and they are gearing up to tackle some of the most pressing challenges.”

The visit coincided with the Association of Colleges Love Our College week which highlights the important role Colleges have to play in supporting the government’s five key missions, one of which is to make Britain a clean energy superpower through delivering clean power by 2030 and accelerating to net zero.
