Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) embraced cultural diversity and community spirit by hosting vibrant Eid al-Fitr celebrations across its Bridgwater and Taunton campuses.

The events brought together students and staff from all departments, including many English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learners, to mark the end of Ramadan and share in a celebration of faith, culture, and fellowship.

Eid al-Fitr, which translates to the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, in one of the most significant holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It marks the conclusion of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month dedicated to fasting from dawn until dusk, increased prayer, reflection, and community engagement.

It is a joyous occasion typically beginning with special congregational prayers, followed by festive meals shared with family and friends, the exchange of gifts, and acts of charity – known as Zakat al-Fitr. As a time of gratitude for the spiritual renewal of Ramadan, it reinforces bonds within the community.

BTC’s celebration event was organised thoughtfully by staff. It provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere within the College’s community hubs, in which the Catering Team prepared delicious vegetable and chicken curries with rice, to be enjoyed by all attendees.

The events served as a wonderful opportunity for meaningful interaction, allowing students and staff to share stories, learn about each other’s cultures and traditions, and enjoy games together.

Catherine Lawrence, ESOL Lecturer, said,

Our Eid celebration was a beautiful reflection of our College’s diverse community, where ESOL students joined staff and students from all departments to come together in unity. It was an event filled with meaningful stories, rich cultural exchanges, and shared traditions, all celebrated over delicious curry.

The event not only marked a special occasion, but also highlighted the strength of our community in embracing and honouring each other’s backgrounds and experiences.

Students also expressed their appreciation. Choman, ESOL student, shared,

We appreciate the College for making food for us and we had a nice time with our friends and staff!

Danial, ESOL student, added,

Thank you very much to the College for respecting our traditions of Ramadan and Eid. Thank you for the lunch, and it was nice for us all to be together. We talked about each other’s cultures and played some games – God bless you.

The Eid celebrations underscore BTC’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, where all faiths and cultures are respected and celebrated – an enriching experience for the entire College community.
