Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) students recently showcased their exceptional talents and dedication at the South West Skills (SWS) Hair & Beauty Therapy competition.
Representing a range of study levels and programmes, BTC students impressed judges and returned with well-earned accolades from this key regional event – just one part of a wider SWS Challenge series.
The newly established SWS Challenge series aims to enhance technical skills and prepare students for future employment and competitions, such as WorldSkills. The series successfully launched earlier in the academic year with an event focussed on Health & Social Care.
Jane Davison, Assistant Principal at New College Swindon and organiser of the South West Skills Challenge, commented on the overall series initiative,
[Health and Social Care] was the first South West Skills Challenge of eight, across different sectors, including Hair and Beauty, Construction, eSports, and more. These events are a great opportunity for students to put their technical skills to the test whilst also developing their skills and confidence to set them up for future employment.
In regards to the Hair & Beauty challenge, students from various BTC Hairdressing and Beauty programmes participated in the competition, which brought together college-aged learners from across the South West region.
The event provided a valuable platform for students to test their technical abilities, gain experience in a competitive environment, and network with peers and industry professionals.
BTC students particularly excelled in the Foundation Hair heat. Shanelle, Foundation learner, secured 3rd place, whilst Amelia, Level 1 Hair & Beauty student, achieved 2nd place. Their specific challenge involved creating imaginative hairstyles inspired by the theme of “Musical”.
Students received certificates, prizes, and invaluable feedback from the expert judging panel, comprised of industry professionals and representatives from awarding bodies like the Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) and organisations such as the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) and WorldSkills.
All participating BTC students were commended for their professionalism and positive representation of the College. Maisie, Level 3 Hair student, also demonstrated her advanced skills during the competition.
Anna Coleman, TLA & Education Projects Co-ordinator at BTC, highlighted the benefits of collaborative events,
Working collaboratively with other colleges has been incredibly insightful for our staff and students here at BTC. Not only have we been able to network with other educators and keep informed of best practice and industry standards, but we have also been able to showcase the talent of our learners on a regional platform.
Having the opportunity to showcase and develop their skills in a supportive and encouraging environment outside of our own facilities has increased confidence and helped to prepare them for the workforce.
Looking ahead, BTC is excited to continue its involvement in the South West Skills Challenge. Anna added,
We are looking forward to being the first college to host the first Sports competition on Thursday 1 May and welcoming other colleges to BTC.
The success at the Hair & Beauty competition underscores BTC’s commitment to providing students with practical experience and opportunities to excel, preparing them effectively for successful careers in their chosen industries.
