Bridgwater and Taunton college apprentice, Emma Blee, previously completed a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care. However, later on in her career as a Trainee Resuscitation Officer in the Somerset NHS foundation Trust, Emma was offered the opportunity to complete a Level 5 Apprenticeship in Standard Healthcare Assistant Practitioner.
Emma took the opportunity to complete an Apprenticeship with open arms, she said;
The course fits in well with work, I have one day a week in work to do off the job training or coursework, I am on the course with others from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust all working in different areas, it has been good getting to know them and learn about what they do as well. The tutors are supportive and friendly.
During her time on the course, Emma has completed some incredible work, including conducting research into cardiac arrest from compliance. As a result, her research was nominated for a Quality Improvement South-West award where she got to attend the award ceremony.
Alongside this, Emma has also started work on a project called ‘Care After Resuscitation Event Support’ or C.A.R.E.S which aims to provide those who have experienced or witnessed someone having a cardiac arrest with support. Emma gained the support of several other teams including the ambulance service, HOPE counselling service and bereavement.
Emma was able to achieve all of this while on work placement as part of her course, something she would not have been able to achieve were she were not an Apprentice.
Emma said;
The college and staff are supportive. I have gained a lot of knowledge, especially about legislation and regulations, I have also made some new friends.
Going forward, Emma plans to complete a full degree in paramedicine and to progress to a Resuscitation Officer and be able to teach higher level courses herself.
Are you considering an apprenticeship? Here is what Emma has to say;
