Course Overview

The duration of the course is 11-13 weeks.

This course will provide a good understanding of a wide range of illnesses and health conditions, raising awareness of some of the most common health conditions.

As part of the course you will study six mandatory units:

UNIT 1 – Arthritis awareness

  • Section 1 Understand what arthritis is
  • Section 2 Understand the treatment options and support services that are available to individuals with arthritis
  • Section 3 Understand the experience of living with arthritis and strategies for managing the condition

UNIT 2 – Stroke awareness

  • Section 1 Know what a stroke is
  • Section 2 Know how to recognise stroke
  • Section 3 Understand the management of risk factors for stroke
  • Section 4 Understand the importance of emergency response and treatment for stroke
  • Section 5 Understand the management of stroke

UNIT 3 – Dementia awareness

  • Section 1 Understand what dementia is
  • Section 2 Understand key features of the theoretical models of dementia
  • Section 3 Know the most common types of dementia and their causes

UNIT 4 – Parkinson’s disease awareness

  • Section 1 Understand what Parkinson’s disease is
  • Section 2 Understand the treatment options and support services that are available to individuals with Parkinson’s disease
  • Section 3 Understand the experience of living with Parkinson’s disease and strategies to manage the condition.

UNIT 5 – Sensory loss awareness

  • Section 1 Understand the factors that impact on an individual with sensory loss and steps that can be taken to overcome these
  • Section 2 Understandthe importance ofeffective communication for an individual with sensory loss
  • Section 3 Know the main causes and conditions of sensory loss
  • Section 4 Know how to recognise when an individual may be experiencing sight and/or hearing loss

UNIT 6 – Understanding how to contribute to monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions

  • Section 1 Understand how to monitor the health of individuals affected by health conditions
  • Section 2 Understand how to carry out observations of the health of individuals affected by health conditions
  • Section 3 Know how to record and report on observations
  • Section 4 Understand how to respond to changes in an individual’s condition

Assessment Methods

Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.
