Welcome to the Engineering Operative Apprenticeship at the Bridgwater Campus! This comprehensive program is designed for individuals who are eager to kick-start their career in engineering. Whether you’re fascinated by maintenance, mechanical manufacturing, electrical and electronic systems, or fabrication, our apprenticeship offers a dynamic pathway to hands-on learning and skill development.

Based at the Engineering Department of the Bridgwater Campus, our state-of-the-art facilities provide the ideal environment for your learning journey. The campus is equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources, ensuring that you receive the highest quality education.

The apprenticeship spans multiple pathways, allowing you to specialise in areas that align with your interests and career goals, the pathways include:
1. Maintenance

  • This role can cover either mechanical, electrical, electronic, or fluid power work, or a combination of them. You will develop a knowledge of maintenance planning, diagnostic and fault finding techniques, and safe working practices.

2. Mechanical Manufacturing

  • Produce individual components, sub-assemblies or completed assemblies using mechanical manufacturing. You will develop a knowledge of specific equipment operating parameters and mechanical manufacturing techniques.

3. Electrical and Electronic

  • Assemble and test a range of electrical components, understanding cable types and where they should be used, electrical and electronic assembly, and testing techniques.

4. Fabrication

  • Shape and join materials, produce components, and carryout quality checks in a fabricating environment. You will learn marking out, preparation, fabrication, and joining techniques.

Assessment Methods

There are no exams. Your knowledge and skills are assessed on an on-going basis and you will have to demonstrate that you can meet the required standards throughout your training. There will however, be examinations for the additional qualifications, such as City & Guilds or BTEC Technical Certificates and Functional Skills (if required).

Progression Options

On completion of a Level 2 Engineering Apprenticeship, you could advance onto a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship in one of these subject areas:

  • Engineering Fitter
  • Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician (MOET)
  • Machining Technician
  • Plate Welder

Entry Requirements

While a 4/C grade in English and maths is preferred, it is not
mandatory. We understand that everyone has a unique learning journey, and
additional English and maths classrooms are available to support you in
achieving a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification.

Attendance Requirements For the first year of the 18 month program, apprentices are required to attend college for two days per week. This balance between on-the-job training and classroom instruction ensures a well-rounded education that combines practical experience with theoretical knowledge.
