Course Overview

Studying Historyprovides an insight into how historians investigate and interpret the past,equipping you withthe tools to examine historical and contemporary sources to determine their reliability and utility.

This subject enables you to develop the skills of a working historian by understanding the historical key concepts of change, continuity, causation, consequence, significance and perspectives.

Our modern history route examines the issue of rights and freedoms in the modern world, with a focus upon 20th century American history, as well as India’s struggle for independence from British rule.

During the second year, you will study political agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain, as well as completing a coursework module. This will provide you with an opportunity to produce an independent research project investigating why historians disagree about an issue of your choosing.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to involve themselves in community projects, as well as residential trips.

Topics mayinclude:

• In search of the American Dream: The USA, 1917-96
• India: The road to independence, 1914-48
• Protest, agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain, 1780-1928.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through three written examinations at the end of your second year.

You will also be required to submit a 4,000 word coursework essay.

Progression Options

A good grade in A Level history is highly valued by all universities. It is suitable for those intending to study a wide range of subjects at undergraduate level, but may be of particular value to those intending to study history, archaeology, politics, law or English.

Several alumni have successfully gained places to read History at Oxbridge or Russell Group universities. The historians Dr. Miles Kere-Peterson, Dr. Jonathan Taylor, and Dr. Jessica Thorne are notable alumns.
