Dynamic new dance company, Freefall, are back with a last chance to see their first touring show: Awakening, at The McMillan Theatre, Bridgwater, on Thursday 3 December, 7pm.
A co-commission with Falmouth University’s Academy of Music and Theatre Arts (AMATA), the show was devised and developed by the co-artistic directors Emily Dobson and Grace Sellwood. With an infectious and passionate drive, Freefall are fast creating a reputation for athletic, honest and powerfully emotive performance work. Grace said,
“Touring the work has been a real treat for us. Getting out to perform across Cornwall and beyond, gaining professional and audience feedback on each of the three pieces has allowed us to explore the way the company can develop artistically and collaboratively.”
Opening piece, Effete, is the first collaboration with musician Sophy Smith (Motionhouse). Sophy’s trademark ethereal soundscape dictates the pace of the piece in which trust, power, beauty and brutality are explored between the two performers.
Choreographer Emily Dobson said,
“One of the audience from the original sharing described this as haunting and spine tingling, which is everything we hoped the piece would be.”
‘Words move‚Ķ’, choreographed by Simon Birch, performed by Grace and Emily, takes inspiration from a poem by T.S. Eliot. Burnt Norton provides a rich imagery of Eliot’s words which Simon used to create what he described as ‘a poem of movement’. The concept of time (past, present and future), rhythm and verse were the focus for the choreography, all of which is supported by music from David Darling.
The final offering is a collaboration with internationally renowned, award-winning choreographer Yael Flexer (Flexer & Sandiland). Warm and funny, I Have a Body, was developed in 2014 at Falmouth University’s rehearsal studios. Yael said,
“Freefall is similar to my own company aesthetic, in that they are distinct personalities. Finding a common language amongst those distinct personalities was an exciting challenge.
“We started off by looking at where the body meets an audience as an object and subject, the way it is both visible and invisible. I think the show can be enjoyed regardless of your knowledge or experience of dance.”
