A Level Law and Criminology students from Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) recently had the opportunity to tour the Bridgwater Police Centre, operated by Avon and Somerset Police.
This visit provided students with an invaluable first-hand experience of the inner workings of law enforcement and criminal justice systems.
Avon and Somerset Police cover a wide expanse in the South West of England, including Bristol and Bath. The Bridgwater centre offered the perfect setting for students to delve deeper into their curriculum.
The tour included interactions with various police staff, an exploration of the custody suite, and insightful discussion on the purpose and challenges that face modern policing.
Liz Nuttall, Head of A Levels and the International Baccalaureate, commented,
The A Level Law and Criminology Diploma students were very fortunate to have a tour of Bridgwater Police Station. The students attending thoroughly enjoyed the visit and were able to gain a practical understanding of different aspects of their studies, applying their knowledge of theory to a real-world environment central to the subjects they are studying.
Ben Evans, A Level student, said,
After the visit, my desire to study law has only grown. I saw first-hand what occurred at each stage, and I want to be able to ensure that innocent people are not subjected to that experience. It was really interesting to hear accounts of what some of the officers had experienced throughout their career, too.
All in all, it complimented my studies perfectly, giving context to cases I’ve studied in the classroom.
This tour emphasises the pastoral benefits of external, subject-related trips. Students remarked that the visit enriched their learning, providing a more tangible understanding and contextualisation of their field of study.
BTC is committed to providing its students with comprehensive educational experiences, combining classroom learning with practical, real-world exposure. This visit underlines the College’s dedication to equipping students with a well-rounded understanding of their chosen subjects, preparing them for future academic and professional endeavours.
