Young people seeking a career in the music and fashion industries were given a huge boost last week when Trustees from the Doris Southcott and Taunton Maids Trusts gifted a total of £100,000 to Bridgwater & Taunton College, at the College’s Taunton Centre.
The Trusts were set up to help Somerset and North Somerset residents aged 16 to 25 years wishing to pursue studies in fashion and textiles and music, and the College will administer the funds on their behalf. Grants will be considered towards specialist equipment, materials, educational visits, external events such as fashion shows or auditions, or additional 1:1 lessons and support. Grant eligibility is not necessarily dependent on household income, although priority will be given to those in the greatest need and those for whom the grant will make a crucial difference to their progression to higher levels of study or employment.
Speaking after the presentation, College Director of Student Services, Mark Nettle said,
“Bridgwater & Taunton College is delighted to be working with the Doris Southcott and Taunton Maids Trusts and to have the opportunity to support young people studying fashion, textiles and music. The funds will go a long way towards helping our students for example, the creation of fashion collections for end of year shows and electronic portfolios for showcasing their skills at interviews. The College has outstanding facilities for the study of fashion, textiles and music, and is thrilled to be able to offer additional financial help to students studying, or applying for, these programmes. We thank the Trustees for their support.”
