A group of Horticulture and Countryside Management adult learners have been working in collaboration with Cannington Parish Council to improve open spaces in the village.
The work has included the creation of a wildflower meadow in Otter’s Brook; this involved sowing yellow rattle to reduce the vigour of the grass, in preparation for establishing wildflowers next year. Wildflower meadows are great for biodiversity and the environment, with the added bonus of being beautiful to look at!
The students have also been busy planting a range of flowering trees in the village cemetery. These will really come into their own in the spring when the blossom will appear and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
The village of Cannington has been home to land-based College provision for over 100 years, and this project is a wonderful example of students working with our neighbours for the benefit of the community.
