A Bristol-based company, Cavendish Nuclear, based at Aztec West, are looking to invest in their workforce and benefit their business by working in partnership with Bridgwater College to recruit two apprentices in Electrical Design and Mechanical Design.

Apprenticeships have continued to grow in popularity with both employers and apprentices during recent years. Bridgwater College’s Engineering department alone has seen their apprentice enrolments increase to over 500 in 2015.

This is the third year Cavendish Nuclear and Bridgwater College have worked together, as Cavendish’s apprentices have been receiving training via Bridgwater College.

Katrina Williams HR Manager at Cavendish Nuclear said,

“We believe that apprentices represent fresh talent that can help us to achieve our business goals. Apprentices also help us retain vital skills to enable us to continue to deliver a quality service to our customers, both now and in the future. Cavendish Nuclear offer exciting and challenging opportunities for individuals who can demonstrate the right attitude and desire to learn a profession in the workplace. Apprentices will get the opportunity to learn from experts in their field, and will be supported and encouraged to develop new skills and work towards recognised qualifications.”

Luke Maidment, a former Bridgwater College student who is now in his first year of his College Apprenticeship with Cavendish Nuclear said,

“I first heard about Cavendish Nuclear when the engineering team visited Bridgwater College and talked to us about the programme. My first year has been great; I am in College for a lot of the time and benefit from the amazing training facilities the College has, but I am also supported by a mentor at Cavendish Nuclear and the engineering and HR team. It was definitely the right decision for me.”

From April 2016, employers will no longer be required to pay employer National Insurance contributions for apprentices (under the age of 25 on earnings up to the upper earnings limit). Small businesses may also be able to receive a £1,500 grant for apprentices aged between 16 and 24 years old.
