Bridgwater College students studying Foundation Degree’s in Countryside Management, Applied Animal Management and Animal Conservation recently visited the South West Deer Rescue and Study Centre near Crewkerne.

Students at the Deer Rescue Centre

Students had the opportunity to enjoy a hands-on experience with a range of deer including Red, Fallow, Axis, Roe, Muntjac and Sika. The site run by Mike Gage and a team of dedicated volunteers cover over 100 acres and offers the opportunity of getting close to a range of deer in a beautiful rural setting. Students were given an extensive tour, were introduced to the residents and shared specific information related to rearing, behavior and health.

Associate Lecture for Countryside Management, Alan Sinclair said,

“The field trip was a great introduction to deer, especially as wild deer can be elusive, and often not easy to spot and certainly not easy to feed biscuits to by hand! The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were able to ask specific questions in close proximity to the animals, guided and narrated by the perfect host Mike.

Mike Gage commented,

“We welcome groups of all ages to the Centre, but it is particularly encouraging to meet students who are passionate about wildlife and genuinely interested in conservation. As a not for profit organisation every visitor and donation is important, so many thanks and come again!
