Students studying Countryside Management at Bridgwater College recently visited Bonsley Woods in Dorset to see charcoal production techniques in a sustainably managed woodland.

Countryside Management group at Bonsley Woods

The visit was an opportunity for the group to view and discuss a wide range of charcoal products, and to consider the benefits of local production and quality. Jim Bettle, Managing Director at the Dorset Charcoal Company, explained the various charcoal production techniques used by the company and the role of coppiced woodlands to ensure the constant regrowth of local woodlands and encourage the increase of plant and wildlife in the region.

Alan Sinclair, Associate Lecturer in Countryside Management at Bridgwater College said,

“This visit was a great opportunity for students to see first-hand the ancient craft of charcoal production by an established producer, and link it to woodland management and related environmental considerations.”
