A group of NQF students who are studying Games Development courses at Bridgwater & Taunton College were recently tasked with researching, designing and developing a deliverable board game as part of their course.
Working in small creative groups, the teams delegated tasks to each other fulfil throughout the process. The exercise involved working through a development check list which allowed the students almost exclusive creative licence.
The project taught valuable skills such as communication, teamwork, Mathematics and English, as each game concept had to show a clear application of writing and numeracy. One group, Briony Woollacott, Nick Smith and Nicole Bernard, worked on a meme-centric card game which required the users to pitch different values in a “battle format”.
Students are typically creating numeric value based fiction games in which the player assumes a character of presents their lateral thinking to solve problems.
Curriculum Manager, Stephen Fletcher said,
“There has been a good reception to this project and I’m looking forward to seeing the board games come to life. The project is enforcing imperative narrative, mechanical and rule-set considerations indicative of a Games development environment for a Video game is just a board game with a TV and controller!”
