Students at Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) have taken a step toward their future careers with the launch of BTC Local, a new shop run by Foundation Learning students on the Bridgwater and Taunton campuses. This exciting initiative provides students with hands-on experience in a working business environment, equipping them with valuable skills for future employment.
The shop, which stocks a variety of goods, is managed entirely by students under the guidance of tutors, offering them the opportunity to develop practical skills such as customer service, stock management, and business operations.
Charlie, one of the students involved, shared their enthusiasm:
“I’ve enjoyed using the computerised till as it’s helped with skills for working in a shop. I would like to work in the catering industry when I finish college, so this will help me with my front-of-house skills.”
Another student, Adam, highlighted the benefits of interacting with customers:
“Working with customers has improved my communication skills and will help me speak to people and build my confidence.”
Tutors are equally excited about the initiative. Will, a Foundation Learning tutor, said:
“It’s a great opportunity for the students to understand business practices whilst working in a real business environment and gain skills to support them in future employment.”
BTC Local is part of the college’s commitment to providing students with real-world experiences that prepare them for the workplace. By combining classroom learning with practical application, students are able to build confidence, develop new skills, and better understand the demands of professional environments.
The shop is open to students, staff, and visitors, providing a welcoming space to purchase a range of goods while supporting the learning journey of BTC’s Foundation Learning students.
