Students studying Games Technology and ICT at Bridgwater & Taunton College had the opportunity to go to INSOMNIA59, a festival for competitive eSports, new technology, up and coming games as well as industry guest Speakers at the NEC.

Festival goers were treated to a range of options from watching competitive leagues and tournaments of games from FIFA, Rocket League and Hearthstone, to taking part in question and answer sessions with YouTubers and other internet personalities.

Learners were also given the chance to try out new board games that had been released as well as hands on experiences with the newest virtual reality offerings, including Syren from Hammerhead Studios, built in Unreal Engine.

Lecturer, David Matravers said,

“It was an exciting experience for both staff and students. The virtual reality headsets were a real highlight. I’m looking forward to going again next year to see and experience the developments within the industry.”

A student who studies A Level Computing said,

“I queued for a while to have a go on Oculus Rifts as I had not played with hand controllers before. It was a little disorientating at first, but really great when you get used to it. I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to go to this festival.”
