Horticulture Adult Learners have created a long-lasting impact at the Bridgwater Campus by spending a week planting trees around the beautiful Garden of Reflection. This was undertaken to mark National Tree Week (27 November – 5 December).

National Tree Week has been the UK’s largest tree celebration since 1973, highlighting their crucial role within our global climate and environmental crisis. The benefits of trees are now very well understood. Trees help remove carbon from the atmosphere, reduce pollution and flooding and they also support biodiversity.

If the UK is to reach its carbon neutral target but 2050, the committee on climate change has recommended an increase in woodland cover from 13% – 19%. Undertaken as part of the College’s commitment to help the effects of climate change, we are working towards the green campus agenda and sustainability.

This hands-on project provides excellent preparation for the students’ upcoming practical assessments. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for them to explore another campus and appreciate BTC’s outstanding facilities and range of opportunities.

Marcus Holder, Vice Principal for Finance and Resources, met with the students who are actively helping to combat climate change, doing their bit for our community whilst gaining valuable practical experience.
