Learning new skills with willow | Bridgwater & Taunton College

Floristry students from Bridgwater & Taunton College have expanded their already accomplished skill base by visiting the Willows & Wetlands Visitor Centre at Stoke St Gregory recently.

The field trip started with a tour of the site, featuring the history of the local willow growing industry and how it has developed over the years. The group discovered how the environment and sustainability continues to be a priority today on the site.  The students then took part in a weaving workshop making wreath rings and bird feeders.

Jacqui Weaver, Course Leader, said,

“I was delighted with the welcome the staff at the Centre gave us, the students discovered how willow is grown and harvested and what products can be made from the processed materials. Learning new skills to aid future diversification will help the students to compete in the industry later on in their careers.”

All of the Floristry students enjoyed the trip immensely and no doubt it will be a regular annual feature in their extra-curricular programme.
