Team BC swept past Richard Huish in the Cup on an emotional day at Fairfax Park. In a sublime team display, Harry Fitchew scored a hat-trick, with other goals from Josh Evans and Joel Dunster.
With the two teams out on the pitch there was a well-attended minute’s applause in memory of Luke Buckingham. The Team BC eleven never looked like they would let the Huish side in front and started the game the brighter as Rhys Hayward’s cross found Owen Sellick who connected well, only to put it straight at the keeper.
Huish then tried to press the Team BC defence only to get caught on the break and concede the first goal of the afternoon. Josh Evans latched onto a lovely through-ball, rounding the keeper before placing the ball into the net.
The home side kept coming forward and shortly after, Kofi Martin was denied a goal as the keeper saved at his near post. BC wouldn’t have to wait long to double their lead as Martin weaved his way through the defence to set up Fitchew for his first of the afternoon as he tapped in, wrong-footing the Huish keeper to make it 2 – 0.
Huish became frantic in their play and there were some strong challenges being put in from both sides. Huish had the chance to get back in the game when the Team BC defence was cut open only for keeper James Annison to clear away. There were also chances for Team BC to further extend their lead before half time as shots from Alex Male, Fitchew and Sellick were all saved, the score at half time 2 – 0 to Team BC.
The second half started as the first had ended with Team BC in the ascendancy and shortly after the 50 minute marker, Fitchew again combined with Martin to score his second and BC’s third. Huish then had opportunities of their own as Annison was all but beat, only for the ball to narrowly go over the bar. Huish then found the back of the net as an attack down the left was converted at the near post.
With the score-line still in the home sides favour Team BC looked to put the game beyond doubt, getting the lucky break in the 72nd minute scoring their fourth and fifth in quick succession. Some calamity defending saw Joel Dunster anticipate the mistake to tap home before Male’s through ball was met by Fitchew who smashed the ball in off the post to complete his hat-trick.
Jamie Laird, Team BC Head Coach said,
“I cannot fault the lads’ performance, we played for Luke Buckingham out there today. We wanted to start out there with a great work rate and we did that, they gave everything out there today. I believe that if we work that hard in each game I think we’ll go on to win a lot of games this season with the quality we have in our squad.”
Final Score: Team BC 5 – 1 Richard Huish
